Musica Pensata
Giovanni Di Domenico, Stan Maris & John Also Bennett

OORtreders Festival 2024

Living in Brussels since 2007, Giovanni Di Domenico has been fortunate in recent years to meet artists who share (at least some of) his musical ideas. One such encounter was with the much younger Flemish accordionist Stan Maris, whom he invited into some of his “chamber music” projects, such as Succo Di Formiche (album released by the prestigious American label Unseen Worlds in July 2023) and Branes (released on the smaller but equally prestigious Italian imprint Canti Magnetici).

Another happy encounter was at a small local vinyl fair in downtown Saint-Gilles, this time with American flautist and composer John Also Bennett. From the experimental music pressed on the vinyls they found there, they developed a bond and decided to play together. They realised, together with Belgian sound artist Pak Yan Lau, a trio session which appeared under the title Tidal Perspectives (Editions Basilic, June 2024).

The concert during OORtreders marks the starting point of a new project launched by Giovanni Di Domenico. Musica Pensata is a concept for a series of compositions in alternating line-ups that, by joining them at a given moment, allow a new, living whole to emerge.

In this first trio concerto, structures unfold extremely slowly. The interventions for each musician start from the idea of a kind of “stasis in motion”: a musical state of being in which free repetition, in which the performer decides on the amount, speed and density of the repetitions, and the alignment between the performers are key to the final result.
